Not our Phoenix, but this is what it looks like! |
It looks like an airplane (sort of) or a glider (sort of), but it's really a hybrid with good airplane qualities and decent glider abilities. Glider pilots (aka "sailplane pilots") call it a "touring motorglider", because it's engine and large fuel capacity let it fly over 700 miles, and it's long wings and sleek curves let it soar on thermals for hundreds of miles when the engine is stopped.
Some of the basic information:
- Two side-by-side seats
- 100 hp Rotax 912 engine, with a feathering propeller (blade angle changed to reduce drag), which provides
- 140 mph top speed
- 1200 feet per minute rate of climb during take-off
- 750 mile range on 24 gallons of fuel
- Non-retractable landing gear
- 50 foot wing span, with removable tips to make it fit in a normal sized hangar
- 30:1 glide ratio (glides 30 miles from 1 mile high) with the engine off, propeller feathered
What a lovely glider!
